Burka Coffee Estate is a historic and environmentally responsible specialty coffee producer located in Northern Tanzania. The estate was established in 1899 by German settlers and named after the natural springs found on the farm that provide water for irrigation and neighboring communities. After changing ownership several times, the estate has been owned by a group of Swiss investors since 1929. Burka currently manages 342 hectares of shade-grown Arabica coffee and employs over 200 permanent staff, with an additional 2000 seasonal staff during harvest. The company is committed to responsible and eco-friendly production practices and provides housing, medical services, and education for permanent staff and their families. Burka’s ideal location at the base of Mt. Meru provides the area with an optimal climate for growing high-quality specialty coffee.
